DHS Bribing College, Graduate Students; and Yet More Food Cops?!
November 16, 2004 4:09 p.m., MT Of course, they call it "awarding scholarships" that have pretty generous stipends, but when one of the conditions of the "award" is "off-campus internship at a DHS-designated facility is required" , it sounds like a lot more than the usual gov propaganda goin' on. Sure enough, farther down I spotted this:The program is designed to "support, stimulate and tap into the intellectual capital in academia to address current and future homeland security challenges, while at the same time educating and inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers dedicated to improving homeland security," according to the release. See all the sordid details at this Federal Computer Week article (FCW.com). And, pulling one from the vault, would you believe that some nanny-ninnies want more federal food regulatory power? Well, of course you would. It's simply awful that twelve agencies meddle into our food, so the answer is: one super-agency to rule them all! And yes, it's got a Newspeakish name: Food Safety Administration. I didn't see this in any mainstream press, but found it at Nation's Restaurant News. Can't remember if they're a registration-required site, but if they are, trusty BugMeNot (now with cool Mozilla plugin!) will getcha in. Yah, I was looking at news almost all day ... getting a CASPIAN newsletter ready. Now I really need to go take a shower.
