Project Announcement Time!
January 7, 2005 4:06 p.m., MT Privacy is something that's been important to me since I was a child. Sharing a room with siblings in a home where respecting property rights wasn't the rule meant I was always in search of places to hide my treasures. Similarly, I had to find places where I could "hide" -- where I could be alone, in order to think, reflect, and explore ideas and concepts ... and my self. But, like too many people of my age, who've grown up with SSNs and bar codes and the like, over the years I've been complacent, and too trusting of those who claimed to value my privacy. In large part through my work at Free-Market.Net (now fully merged with the International Society for Individual Liberty), and even more with CASPIAN and the fine people there, both the complacence and trust are gone. No one will ever value my privacy as much as I do, and no one will ever work as hard to keep my sensitive information private as I. Yet, in our increasingly information-driven western culture, individuals who understand that, and want some measure of privacy are becoming trapped. We're trapped by laws that their creators claim will help protect our privacy, but which actually create more loopholes through which sensitive information slips; we're trapped between corporate policies that allow video surveillance when we shop at their stores and those that track us online -- both of which plug us into ever-growing databases that are built, then rented, sold, and swapped without our knowledge and consent; and worst, we're trapped in a culture that views anyone who wants some privacy as being an individual with something to hide. I'm tired of it all. And I'm doing something to strike against it all. I'm writing a book that will address the myriad challenges privacy-loving individuals around the world face. Governmental privacy threats (through their bureaucracies, and information-stealing and information-disseminating policies) and corporate privacy threats ... consumer privacy and medical privacy ... these are some of the topics I'll cover. And, rather than just dishing the bad news, I'll give you practical information on solving privacy problems. That's the barebones sketch. There's more, but more information will have to wait until I make sufficient progress to warrant future announcements. Thanks for all your interest, and encouragement as I was thinking about whether to launch this project. I'm excited about it, and hope you are too! If you'd like to help, here's where you can find out how to get in touch with me. Replies: 7 individuals have opined On Sunday, January 9th, Sunni said:

As the Snake striketh the keypad, I'll wager this wabbling wicked world shall right itself again. I'm looking forward to the book! Way cool! But like too many Americans, I've little to send to you on privacy, having lost most all of that already! On Saturday, January 8th, Col. Hogan said:
You write it, I'll read it. On Saturday, January 8th, Unstructured said:
