The Sunni Snake Goes All Girly!

You wouldn't believe what I did this morning. I spent over an hour online, looking at all the dresses (and other dressy clothes items) a certain web site currently has for sale. I'm not revealing the site because doing so would make those who know me well laugh even harder than they probably already are, and I'd hate for anyone to choke to death because of me. (If any of you feel faint, please put your head between your knees until the feeling passes. Repeat as necessary to the end of this post -- or abandon it now to save yourself the hassle.)

I hate to shop primarily because I have a very hard time finding clothes that I like. Jeans and t-shirt -- my most common attire -- are comfortable, but they aren't always appropriate. When I was doing the college prof gig, my wardrobe was (predictably) built around black and white, with just a few splashes of color. I like to look nice more often than I currently do, but as I've already said, it's hard to find clothes that suit me. Always has been for me. Part of it is that I don't much care for a lot of what passes for fashion in the USSA, and part of it is also that I'm very picky about fabrics and the quality of workmanship that goes into an item. Pre-snolfs, it was a regular part of my purchasing routine to trim all the loose threads off an item, and (if relevant) re-sew all the buttons on properly, before any fell off due to shoddy workmanship.

So, anyway, here I sat, oohing and ahhing over numerous items at this site, mouse finger twitching to click on purchase buttons, imagining how nice I'd look in many of them even though I rarely need to be nicely dressed, and telling myself, You silly snake, you don't need to be spending money on dressy clothing! What is with you this morning?!

And that's true; I don't need to; I've other goals that will require as much capital as I can amass in the coming months, and then some. (So go buy a book from us or place an ad on Sunni's Salon, to help me reach my goals! smile ) But I want to. And I probably will. It's so rare when I go ga-ga over clothes that I know better than to pass up a good opportunity when one arises.

As a reward for those of you who made it to the end of this silliness, something freedom-related: Happy REAL Independence Day! (In the sense of 7/2/1776 being the day that the vote for independence was taken -- not in the sense that we've much liberty left to celebrate here.)

Personally, I prefer to shop at thrift stores. You get 20-30 years of fashions to choose from so you can find something that suits your style instead of buying whatever colors and cuts the fashion industry has decided to sell this year. The clothes are also a lot less expensive.

Thrift stores really vary in quality so check a few out before writing them off. Also try consignment stores.

Hi, Jacqueline, and welcome! Yah, I like thrift and consignment stores too -- I usually shop there for most things. But these dresses aren't likely to be found in such places.

If they are specific dresses from a specific company, try searching for them on eBay too. I want to buy a bunch of those wrinkle- stain- etc. resistent travel clothes before I leave for Costa Rica and I've found a bunch for sale used on eBay. Check each week for new listings.

So, where do you buy the books? I don't have anything to advertise.

Hi, Scott!!! Long time no hear or see -- I hope you're doing well these days. To answer your question, in the yellow column on the Salon's home page are search boxes and the like for several booksellers. Or, select a book from the index page for book reviews; each review has at least one link to purchase the book. If music's more your thing, you can do similarly in the Musical Maunderings section. Thanks for asking.

It feels weird not to be camping with a bunch of LRTers today ... I've missed you.
