Vin's Mixed Message

I was rather distracted and busy the other day when a message from Vin Suprynowicz's The Libertarian site arrived. Now that I've had a chance to read the entire thing, I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad. [Correction added 12/26, because even waiting to "read the entire thing", I still managed to misunderstand it.]

The bad news is that Vin's announced his retirement from his Las Vegas Review-Journal columns going to stop writing his "The Libertarian" columns, upon which many of his LVRJ columns are based. "The Libertarian" gave Vin the ability to tell much more of a story than the word-count constraints of a newspaper column. Until the end of March, 2006, Vin's offering a reduced price to subscribe to this last year of "The Libertarian". That won't happen for a while still -- March 2007, to be more precise -- but I already feel a pang of loss. Vin and Jim Bovard are the only two solidly pro-freedom investigative journalists I know of (strictly speaking, John Stossel doesn't fall into that category in my opinion), and to lose one just when their kind of work is most needed is a real blow. I'm hopeful that there are younger pro-freedom journalists out there, learning their chops, but am not too optimistic about that.

The good news is that Vin says he'll be focusing more on fiction. I'm still withholding judgment, because a sample size of one is insufficient for reaching a conclusion, but his first novel, The Black Arrow, so impressed me that it's possible Vin could give F. Paul Wilson some serious competition for the title of "Sunni's favorite novelist".

Heh. I'm sure they're both so covetous of that title they'll be working overtime to try to claim it. [That's sarcasm, folks.]
