Ghosts
August 2, 2006

I have a number of friends who seem to have virtually no memories from when they were young ... or older, for that matter. Important dates slide by unnoticed by them, year after year after year ... and for the longest time, I felt sorry for them. I couldn't imagine having no mileposts to mark my years by.

But this year—today—how I wish I could join them.

As much as we hate to face them, our ghosts make us real. Pain is the price we pay for caring, and the happy memories and lessons learned are worth the investment. But those mileposts creep up on you anyway - friends share your pain.

Indeed. Thanks for the reminder. Are you familiar with the Rush song Bravado (from Roll the Bones)? There's a line in it that's appropriate here: "We will pay the price, but we will not count the cost."

I've noticed that attempts at art created by people who've not known much pain often seem lacking ... but I have to object to the suggestion that pain is somehow more important than joy.

Both shape us, and an incapacity to fully appreciate either can distort us.

Lobo, I don't see where BW or I are saying, or even implying, that pain is more important than joy. Rather, exactly as you say, "both shape us".
