Sunni and the Conspirators

What the Snolfs did This Halloween

Because some folks have asked, and because it's an interesting psychological study, of a very general sort.

Weeks in advance, we began encouraging the snolfs to think about costumes. Their responses were amusing.

Snolf the First (male): I want to be something scary. (Specifics varied, and included possibilities like V as well as his own scary creation.)

Snolf the Second (female): I want to be a cute fluffy bunny, with pink ears and a big tail. I'll hop up to the door, and when they start to put candy in my bag, I'll pull out a big axe! [dissolves into laughter at this point every time she says this]

As the big day approached, their plans remained essentially unchanged—until we went shopping for costumes.

Snolf the First: Generic black, scary costume, with black and red face paint, and plastic knife/sword/other sharp cutting implement accessories. He dubbed himself a Bone Lord.

Snolf the Second: White, pink, and purple princess gown, with tulle over the skirt, a tulle wrap with fur on the elastic bands that held it on her wrists, and a tiara. (She wanted high-heeled shoes to complete the ensemble, but thankfully, none were available in her size in the costume section, and she didn't think to ask for real shoes.)

The little town nearby doesn't do door-to-door trick-or-treating—guess it's too dangerous or something. Instead, there's a Halloween parade down the main street of town, where most of the businesses are located, and afterward, trick-or-treating at participating merchants' shops. Apparently, some were quite creative, turning their place into a shop of horrors of sorts. The snolfs didn't care a fig about the ribbon award they received for participating in the parade; their concern was with their booty. And by all accounts, it was a satisfactory haul.

They even had enough self-control not to gorge on candy, choosing instead to eat some of the chili I made to help warm them up upon their return. Pumpkins were lit (having been carved the night before), and candy-trading ensued. A good time all around.
