I have a Thanksgiving treat. Unlike last year, when I published an essay which many may have thought somewhat "unseasonal" (though it is one that I consider very thought-provoking), this year I have something which I think will mesh rather than clash with most people's Thanksgiving observance.
I just published a review of the movie Places In The Heart from 1984. It is not a new film. Indeed, it is old enough that it may very well be new to some people.
Like Bill Kauffman, one of my favorite writers, I like this film very much. In his excellent book America First:Its History, Culture, and Politics, he calls Places In The Heart a "beautiful film" and says "the widow and her hired man are models of cooperative individualism." I agree, but there is more to say than Bill could put in a footnote (on Page 203).
Give my review a read and if you like what you find there give the film a view, too.
I'll have a new set of movie selections from cable/DBS for This Weekend out soon. Till then this page has a preliminary view. I'm sure you can find the DVD or VHS of Places In The Heart wherever you rent, but HBO is also showing it in the upcoming week. For those who might wish to buy a copy of the film, the review page has Amazon links.
Enjoy.
