“I view things as they are, without regard to place or person; my country is the world, and my religion is to do good.” – Thomas Paine
Jorge's Profile
Jorge has this to say about himself:I live with my wife, and two unschooled/uncoerced daughters. We are owned by five cats. My eldest daughter has three dogs (who the cats torment) and we have a constantly changing number of chickens and rabbits. At the time of this writing we are researching doing a fish pond and raising iguanas for food.
We have lived in Costa Rica since early 2000, moving here for many reasons. High among those reasons was the large degree of effective freedom available here. Another reason was that Costa Rica is the only country where Libertarians are elected to national office. Soon after arriving here I became involved with the Movimiento Libertario, doing what I could to help advance liberty using the political process. I have come to realize this was a mistake and am no longer involved with the party.
I started with Libertarian politics in 1980 with the Clark campaign. Then worked on the NYC mayor's race and the NY governor's race, before giving up on the US Libertarian Party.
In the late 1980s, when the opportunity presented itself, I left the US, living in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore and now Costa Rica.
I am a huge science fiction fan, and foolishly allowed myself to be elected to the board of the Libertarian Futurist Society. I also served on the LFS's Prometheus Award Best Novel Finalist committee from 2002 through 2005, which was a lot of fun, but for every great book I read there were at least three that I could have done without.
I love playing with computers, and for some strange reason, people give me money when I do.
As many pro-freedom individuals are interested in what's going in Costa Rica, I'm hoping Jorge will provide us an ongoing insider's view of both the politics and the day-to-day practicalities of living there -- plus anything else he'd like to talk about.
