Recommendations for a Linux Email Client?

Sunni's picture

Since moving over to Linux, I’ve been using Thunderbird as my email client ... and I don’t like it very much. If it has some capabilities I need (templates, creating and using lists of recipients), I haven’t been able to find them; and there are some other minor annoyances I have with it.

Yesterday I looked over several possibilities, and have narrowed the field to three: KMail; Sylpheed; and Evolution. Anybody have experience with one or more of these? Any advice is welcome; they all look pretty good. For what it’s worth, my Windows email client was Calypso, which I happily used for many years. I’m not expecting to be able to import all that stuff, but if I could, that’d be mighty tasty icing on the cake.

I see you can blog again.

I see you can blog again. Cool.

Been happy enough with tbird here but you have some specific requirements. Only question I'd have for the other email clients is whether encryption is integrated? That's basically the reason I went from mutt to tbird.

I believe all can handle

I believe all can handle that. I was used to handling encryption mechanically with Calypso, and am not averse to going back to that if need be, but I don’t think I’ll need to.

Linux Email Client

My preferred email client was Thunderbird, but I also used Kmail - both were pretty easy when it came to set up PGP. I tried Evolution because it looked alot like Outlook, but it never was able to sync correctly with my Palm PDA - the times were always off, no matter how many different ways I changed settings.

Kmail

After years of using Linux, I've settled on Kmail and the KDE desktop overall. I used Evolution for awhile, but was rather disappointed in their refusal to implement inline PGP signing because in some circles, it is considered "depracated."

However, unfortunately because Microsoft refuses to implement the newer (and better) OpenPGP/Mime method, all signed emails to Outlook users were difficult to locate the message body - as well, Outlook didn't recognize the attached signature as being an OpenPGP/Mime signature - and sometimes users would be presented with a virus warning.

Since switching to Kmail, I enjoy the other features of Kontact as well - and the fact most of it syncs with my Palm Pilot using Kpilot.

Earlier versions of Kmail sometimes had difficulty in implementing fully GnuPG encryption depending on the distribution it came with - but it seems now that most distributions have included all the "hooks" required to get it working "out of the box" now.

Calypso

Depending on the mail format used by Calypso, you may be able to import all your old mail into Kmail, as well. Kmaill will import easily email from The Bat! as well as Outlook, so may be in luck - but I don't know for sure.

One strike against Kmail is it's lack of ability to create templates - but I believe this is being worked on.

Kmail can create distribution lists although at first, it's not "easy" to figure out how to begin this - although once you've discovered how, it's quite simple as long as those on the distribitution list(s) are in your Contact List (Adress Book) that is built in to "Kontact"

No Templates for KMail?

KMail can’t do templates? Eep. I thought it could.

Think I'll give Sylpheed a whirl. Thanks for all the input, gents!

Oooops

Looks like I wrote too soon. Apparently the latest version of Kmail, 3.5.6 DOES have a template engine. I'm still using 3.5.5.

I'm still stuck with Thunbderbird...

and am hoping for something better. Lightweight, but still fairly full-featured. Nothing seems to satisfy at present.

Sylpheed's Probably Out

I tried Sylpheed some today, and wasn’t able to find a way to get encryption working with it. Since Ian says KMail does have template features, I’ll probably go with it.

I am really surprised at how sucky Thunderbird is, given all the hype I see for it. Whassup with that?

Kmail

Sunni - it is the latest version of KDE - which you may or may not have - it was just released a month ago, so it is not even in a lot of repositories yet.

Silly Snake!

Well, silly me, I realized late this afternoon that I currently don’t need message template capabilities. (Funny how some habits are so slow to degrade—that’s a hold over from my FMN days.) I got KMail fired up a bit ago, figured out how to encrypt with it, and will probably transfer my TBird and Sylpheed mail over tomorrow morning. Poked around in KMail just a bit, but I like what I’m seeing.

I Love Kmail

If you run into any issues - feel free to contact me :) I've been using Kmail for years.. I know it _pretty_ well.

You might like the full fledged PIM - Kontact. I use it - and not sure now what I'd do without it! :)

Thunderbird - have you looked at extensions?

Sunni,
Have you explored Thunderbird extensions? I'm not sure about the particular functionality you're interested in but there is a lot of stuff available.

Thanks!

Thanks for the pointer, Astoria; I haven’t explored the extensions. At this point, unless something goes really wrong with KMail, I’ll stick with it. It just feels more comfortable to me already.
