What I Learned Yesterday

Last winter, MAL reported that he’d seen a couple of rabbits around his house, and tried to feed them, but they rejected his offerings—even carrots, which he described as “chocolate for rabbits”. This year, though, they’ve gotten over whatever qualms they had; and with the brutally cold weather, and more recently, substantial snow accumulations, we’ve been happy to share our carrots with them. We figured they were eating them, since we’ve observed a few nibbled-on stubs, along with rabbitprints in the snow, and a few pellets.

Yesterday I was shoveling our walk again (it seems to be Snowdrift Central), and also shoveled a couple of other areas. While doing that, I found some orange splotches in the snow, invariably accompanied by a brown pellet or two. Upon seeing that, I started singing a slighly modded Frank Zappa song: “Watch out where the rabbits go/And don’t you eat that orange snow”!

(And now that I’m listening to that album, I discover that “Nanook Rubs It” is the source of “great googly moogly”. Hadn’t noticed that before.)

Bunnies

We had nine baby bunnies born in the last two days, plus four more does that could potentially provide in the next three days. Some of them might be easter bunnies, some will end up on the dinner table - though not necessarily ours. Our snakes think rabbits are yummy , y'know.
