A long, long time ago (but not in a galaxy far, far away), NeoWayland honored this place by choosing it for a Thinking Blogger award. Being both an award and a meme, the baton was passed to me to choose five bloggers upon whom to bestow the award.
And so I started thinking about that. And it didn’t take very long for me to conclude that this was much too similar to choosing favorites for me to be able to select five bloggers quickly. I think that became a convenient excuse to avoid choosing. That said, though, the folks listed to the right are largely there because I regularly find thoughtful content at those sites. That’s why I read blogs—to be stimulated, challenged ... to have my ideas critiqued and checked, and improved, I hope.
But I didn’t stop thinking about it as I visited the many sites I try to frequent, and so, at long last, I have compiled my list.
I suppose I should also say that I only considered sites that are currently on my blogroll—which unfortunately leaves out many very good blogs that I often slither to from others’ blogrolls. And, although I was tempted to nominate a couple of Conspirators for the award, that struck me as a little incestuous, and also arrogant on my part, since NeoWayland nominated this entire blog, not just my ramblings. So—back to the subject at hand at long last—my list ...
lewlew’s Yak Attack: Lewlew is a fellow rare bird – a pro-freedom mother – and thus she often writes on subjects that I’m pondering, in a context that is very similar to my own. But wait, there’s more! She yaks about art, and gardening, and occasionally shares penetrating insights too. She’s a very busy person, so posting is sometimes sporadic, but for me her posts are invariably worth waiting for.
Vache Folle at St. George Blog: Vache is sort of at the other end of the spectrum from me, in a sense: he has no children, he has as much as admitted that he thinks positive thinking is overrated, and he’s a Christian. It is his commentary on those subjects (and others) that often serve as a good check on my own ideas. I like the personal stuff he shares too, because it is often thought-provoking for me as well.
Dr. Lenny at The Zone: A scientist who shares his ideas via chemistry metaphor and poetry alike (as well as other ways). Sometimes our brainwaves seem to align and grokking is easy; other times I think I’m in over my head. But his content is always stimulating and colorful.
Michael Jarrell’s Uncivil Defence: While I do appreciate the occasional bits of news and analysis he provides, what I like even better is his metaphorical content, for example the series (unintended? I don’t know) he did last year on gardening. Always thoughtful, never hyperbolic, and a perspective informed by worldwide traveling. Good stuff.
Ian at Ianism! The Sequel: I could probably get away with simply quoting his blog header by way of explanation: “Student of all, disciple of none”. He consistently pokes beneath the veneer of ideas and issues, almost always coming up with something different or interesting. Although it’s sometimes hard to follow, I also like that his posts are usually informally structured and seem to follow his train of thought.
So, now I get to hand off the baton to each of you. Here’s the procedure:
1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to five blogs that make you think;
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme; and
3. Optional: Display the “Thinking Blogger Award” with a link to the post that you wrote (here is an alternative silver version if gold doesn’t fit your blog).
If anyone else would like to participate by pointing to thought-provoking blogs (or web sites in general) in the comments, please do. Hotlinks are limited to three per post (anti-spam measure), and apparently if you preface text links with “http://www”, they will count toward that total as well.
Thanks, NeoWayland, for choosing this site as one of your winners, and for providing me an interesting (if somewhat painful) exercise!

Gee Whiz...
Or is that cheese whiz? I don't know what to say. I am honoured, to say the least. Don't know that I'm deserving of it, but I accept it all the same. And will certainly pass is on if I can keep the number down to 5. There are so many folks out there that make me stop and think about things. This is certainly one of those sites. Wow...just...wow.
This is a cheese whiz free zone!
Thank you, Michael. The way I kept the number down to five was by adopting a set of criteria to further distinguish among the blogs that get me thinking. For example, I focused on ones that have a fair amount of personal, pro-freedom content. Lots of people can write good essays or rants in reaction to the state’s antics, but there’s so much more to freedom than that.
Anyway, maybe that will help you whittle your contenders down some ... and given how long it took me to create my list, I’m not going to time you!
You're welcome! Great
You're welcome!
Great choices. And I confess I use your blogroll more than a little bit myself.
Heh.
Now you’ve really put the pressure on me to get it whipped into better shape! There are several worthy sites not listed here yet.
I am on a self-imposed
I am on a self-imposed sabbatical - so i will make the post around and about the fourth of july. thank you for the grokking - much too much has happened in the past six weeks to not be in awe. have fun with the snolfs.
Gobsmacked
I saw this post a couple of days ago, and thought I had posted a reply - but it seems the reply was not posted. Possibly an issue with my log in here.. or something else going on.. who knows.. all I can recall is that I wanted to say how freaking honoured I was to have been included in your list!
I was ... shocked, actually. Gobsmacked.
Especially with the idea that as far as I'm concerned, I haven't even written anything with the idea of "thinking" in mind in quite some time.
Years ago, I had an idea in mind that I would write up blog posts, with the idea of gaining some folks' respect. That waned somewhat, until I got to the idea that maybe I'd just like to have the respect of a few people that I respected the writings of. I could count those people on the fingers on my right hand (I have a full four fingers and a thumb on that hand).
Sunni Maravillosa was one of those persons I wanted the respect of and often worried after some of my posts, "Oh shit! What's she gonna think about me now??"
Then I got to the point where I never gave a crap what others thought... heh.
Except for Sunni.
But I know much of my writing is not worth much "respect," it just is what it is.
"Although it’s sometimes hard to follow,..."
God.. I know. Years ago, before keyboards were ever put in front of my face, I think pen and paper slowed me down and I wrote better back then.
Something I know I have to work at better. If I feel like it. It's just a blog though. A medium to ramble.
Thank you so much, Sunni. I think you've possibly raised the bar for me. Or maybe not. I'm listening to The Who sing "Man In A Purple Dress."
Not sure if it's a Daltrey or Townshend song.. but wish I wrote it :)

My turn
... to be awed, that is. Thank you, Ian. The fact that your writing “just is what it is”—no pretense, no sacred cows to tiptoe around—is one of the reasons I enjoy it. Your rambles are much more interesting and stimulating than most I’ve seen ... and I have visited some very unusual places!
Only raise the bar if you want it raised ... I’m happy with things as they are. But I still have not heard that song!
