Well, I survived the trip. Actually, it was much better than that bare statement would suggest, in most respects.
The best element of the adventure was undoubtedly the warm hospitality extended by friends who put me up for a night or two. Our time together was invariably too short, but so stimulating, helpful, fun, and all-around pleasant that I cannot complain. There was also wonderful food and great music shared. How can I not be a happy Snake with all that? Heartfelt thanks to each of you, and thanks also to the Family members (that includes canines) who visited with me while I recharged in MT.
Another pleasant element was the dearth of sharks (that’s what the snolfs call cops) on the roads after I’d gotten sufficiently west. I saw no cops at all in Wyoming, and just two across all of Montana (unfortunately, one of those two had stopped someone, probably for the horrible crime of being in a hurry). It was an interesting experience, cruising along at speeds hovering around 85–90 mph and being passed as if I were poking along at 60 in a 70 mph zone.
The downsides were only two. First, MAL didn’t make the move with me, so missing him was a large element of the trip. Second, once I was underway, I was so eager to get to each destination that I failed to stop at any points of interest along the way—and there were numerous opportunities for such explorations. With the cost of fuel continuing to climb, that may have been my last chance to wander a good-sized portion of the country and enjoy the quirky charms of small museums and singular creators. Still, though, I have no regrets for choosing the course I did.
And now to set to settling in and finding my own living quarters ... the adventure doesn’t stop.
A Most Civilized Way to Travel

Glad you made it
Subject line says it. Hope the wee ones had fun.
Thanks for stopping by- I
Thanks for stopping by- I had a great time!
ditto
Same here: thanks for stopping by!
I hope Jeff Buckley wasn't too sad to listen to.
Happy to be here (and to oblige) ...
Thanks, everybody. H.C., the snolfs were already here, which was a good thing—there was barely room left for me in the car when MAL finished packing it! (Yes, I am one of those spatially-impaired femmes. I attribute that to being repeatedly told, “Baby, it’s 9 inches!” when it’s actually 6, if you know what I mean ...)
Kirsten and Polka, I appreciate your warm hospitality greatly. Hope I can return the favor some day, too! I find I’m craving bigos ... but no one else here likes sauerkraut, so I probably won’t be able to make it for a while. Jeff Buckley was very nice to listen to; thanks again for the disc.
another ditto!
Sunni, glad you made it, and I understand how you feel about not having time to enjoy all the stops - in 2005 we made 9 (very quick) trips up and down the east coast of Aus, but never had time to 'smell the roses'...and we also pondered much about the various sharks we saw along the route (amazingly, we never got booked, despite schools of hungry predators, constantly changing speed zones and automatic cameras, which led to a story at AntiSF: "In The Interests of Public Safety" , which is also in my 'Navigating' collection).
So good!
It was so good to have you here, and all I can say is that next time it just has to be longer!! If you come when it's warm, we can make a trip out to the woods so we can look for wild food and herbs too.
So much to do and talk about. So little time. :)

Yay!
You made it! I'll drop you a line by e-mail.
