What Do You Say?

I continue to seek answers to questions that are mostly unanswerable in my current context ... yet my wanderings on the web—sometimes directed by others, mostly haphazard jumpings of my own—occasionally offer droplets of insight.

Yesterday evening I came across an excerpt of one of James Burke’s episodes from The Day the Universe Changed. I recall seeing that on PBS when it came out, and being mightily impressed. Rediscovering him now (we’ve just finished watching one of his previous series, Connections), I am even more awed. This vid is densely packed with ideas that speak to me—some of which will certainly not speak to some of you. My reaction to my first viewing of this closing bit of the series last night was, “Burke was spot on some 20 years ago! We are living in this opportunity—and yet I fear we’re squandering it.” By “we” I meant The Family—we freedom-loving individuals. Intolerance and fear keep us from creating what’s possible ... what Burke mentions in his closing words here.

So, what do you say?

Hmmm

I am unclear how you arrive at "Intolerance and fear keep us from creating what’s possible" from Burke's closing words. Or how we are squandering the opportunities of the present day.

Of course there are many who operate on the basis of "hatred of the heretic." This is true of any movement and it is especially true of political ones, because they operate in a winner-take-all environment. But those of us who simply seek to live free are not doing that.

Just to state one example: I really do not hate those who chose Barr as the LP's presidential candidate. I think they are mistaken, but who knows, maybe they will accomplish something positive. They are using their resources and are entitled to do what they want with them.

I do not fully agree with Burke and the "any view is correct" philosophy. This can lead to a "Do what you will shall be the whole of the law" point of view. Hardly "balanced anarchy".

But I suspect I have missed the point you are trying to communicate.

A bit of clarity, I hope

I am unclear how you arrive at "Intolerance and fear keep us from creating what’s possible" from Burke's closing words. Or how we are squandering the opportunities of the present day.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to suggest that Burke is implying that. That was my interpretation of the fact that although in some respects the open society he so presciently saw is upon us, we are a long way away from balanced anarchy. I think we anarchists are squandering the opportunities of the present day because our fears—whether they be of losing in a “winner-take-all” environment or something else, particularly of succeeding—and our own intolerances—of individuals different from us in some cases, who aren’t pure enough for us, and who are doing freedom in ways different than the ones we prefer—greatly inhibit our ability to be exemplars of what Burke envisioned.

I do not fully agree with Burke and the "any view is correct" philosophy.

I didn’t hear anything that I parsed in that way, Jorge. Are you referring to this statement?:

[W]ith it we could operate on the basis that values and standards and ethics and facts and truth all depend on what your view of the world is—and that there may be as many views of that as there are people.

It seems to me that in the above, Burke is simply pointing out what reality is, and how far we are from it because much of our lives is spent in “coerced conformity”.

Burke and Bronowski

I have enjoyed all of Burke's work which I've seen. Earlier, in the 70s, a similarly themed series appeared written and hosted by Jacob Bronowski: The Ascent of Man. It ranks as one of my all time favorites. Here's a relevant clip . . .

Link?

Tom, for some reason I’m unable to see the embedded vid in your comment. Can you provide a link to it, please? (Often I can download vids even if I cannot see them; for some reason that isn’t working today either, but I hope I can do it from YouTube.)

YouTube link

YouTube seems quite sluggish today. I added a link to the prior comment but here it is again: Link
