My RSS feed just brought me THIS GEM on the wastefulness of most modern electrical devices we often take for granted. As I live "off the grid" by means of solar power (for the most part) I have found that one of the keys to an abundant life is "waste not, want not." Each device that I have plugged into my electrical in-home-grid has a switch controlling it*, and unless I am using that device at the present moment, that switch is turned OFF. Another example: matches/BIC-lighters are much cheaper than pilot lights.
* (I went to a lot of effort to install all of those switches, and they indeed have paid me back handsomely in freedom.)
It is surprising to me how many people slave away at multiple jobs to feed parasites of their own choosing rather than simply taking the time to make wise choices regarding their needs and desires. If you are unfamiliar with this topic, take a gander at it and you will be surprised at the amount of your work energy that you are simply flushing down the rat hole of unthinking waste. (Regardless of your opinion on "saving the planet" or any other considerations, this just makes sense.)

If you REALLY want to be terrified, calculate the amount of money/life-essence it costs to run your refrigerator. I consider all of the items that I'm going to need from or want to put back before I open that door, and then I do it as fast as I can and slam that sucker closed again. Refrigeration is a great benefit of modern life, but it's no where near a free one.
