Five Inches (and Counting)

Sunni's picture

It could actually be more; I didn’t keep close track.

I have lost five inches around my waist since joining the dojo about nine months ago. To be fair, I had dropped some weight prior to starting karate, but not a lot; and I don’t know from where. Also, I’m going on what I remember my largest waist measurement to be—I may have been even wider.

The process has actually been pretty easy. As part of our warmups, we do a fair bit of what Sensei calls (in the kid’s class) “tummy happiness” work. Even though it’s been painful and challenging, I’ve focused on doing them with good form first and foremost, and as I’ve gained strength, my focus shifted to doing them deeper and faster.

I have not been starving myself—I wouldn’t be able to keep up with my training if I didn’t eat enough. I suspect I’m taking in more calories these days, but other than the occasional alcoholic beverage or dessert, I’m eating more nutritionally dense foods. I drink a lot more water than I used to, which seems to be an important part of the equation. Last, I’m sleeping better, which if memory serves has recently been shown to be an important component of losing weight.

Other parts of me would probably show similar progress, if I’d had a clear beginning point recorded. But the numbers aren’t the most important things to me: I’m stronger and more flexible than I’ve been in years. My “fat girl” clothes no longer fit me; I feel like I’m swimming in them. The best part of all is that I’ll continue to improve as I keep training. Since I enjoy training enormously, I see nothing but win ahead for me.

Trickle-Down

That's great news, Sunni! The fact that you say how much you enjoy your training and the general peace of mind you seem to be displaying lately would surely feed your improving fitness and vice versa. Funny how the mind and body feed off of one another. I'm glad to hear of your success in this endeavor.

Murphy's Bye-Laws

....What?

Skinny and deadly? Stop it already, girl.

What's it going to take to get you out here again....not that way...just to visit.

You know how much I had traveling, right?

Not even close.

To either skinny or deadly. When I allow myself to start thinking about numbers, I’d like to lose another 15 lb. or so. Regarding the karate, I haven’t been training for a full year yet, so I’m little more than a beginner.

These days I’m not much on traveling, either ... maybe we could meet halfway?

Halfway

Where would halfway be near?

Near someone interesting, methinks

I think halfway might be in the vicinity of the infamous Mr. Bill. Perhaps he’ll ride in on Gumby and enlighten us.

Hydration

Hi Sunni -
Decided to go thru the password game yet again to make comment - dunno why your site doesn't like me. The biggest challenge in significant weight loss is to keep your body hydrated properly - you are almost training your water to be in a new configuration.
Sound like you need a stitchery to alter your clothes. Too bad you are not here in Oregon.

Enjoy!

Neat idea!

There are probably similar setups in this area, Dr. Lenny ... but I’ll admit to being leery of the mighty sewing machine.

What do you mean by “almost training your water to be in a new configuration”? Sounds fairly complicated. And thanks for putting up with my squinky system—I don’t think it’s anything personal.
