Where Has the Year Gone?

Sunni's picture

I didn’t mean to be absent from here for so long, but I’ve been busier than usual. Most of you would be quite surprised to learn what’s taken up a large chunk of my time of late.

Dancing—ballet, to be precise.

Snolf Mk II is in her third year of ballet lessons, and this year she persuaded me to play a parent in her school’s performance of The Nutcracker. I said yes before considering what would be required of me ... and then, at the first rehearsal, learned that it was worse than what I’d expected. This year, for the first time that I am aware of, the adult partygoers in the first act have actual dance steps—actual ballet steps, to be precise. This isn’t just walking about gracefully: we have spins and jumps to perform, and we’re supposed to be doing them in synchrony.

Meanwhile, back at the dojo, Snolf Mk I and I have been very hard at work, learning our new kata and bunkai, and building power in our punches and kicks. I’ve endured a couple of setbacks (injured toes and uncooperative lungs), but Sensei F says she’s pleased with my progress. I’m feeling very good about my work, too ... but it isn’t exactly helping me try to be graceful and flowing at the ballet rehearsals. (It also didn’t help that I wore my Vibrams to the first rehearsal.)

My partner and I are doing well together; he’s a lot of fun to dance with (he’s a newbie like me, although he is taking adult ballet class at the school); and Mk II is absolutely thrilled that I’m doing this (she plays our daughter in the first act). My hair will be curled and put up, with my bangs disguised somehow; I will be in full makeup (horrors!); and I will wear a long red satin gown with a red and gold necklace and black heels (“character shoes”, they’re called). Quite the lady! But still, every time I look in the wall of mirrors at the ballet studio I just want to do a kata.

Our first performance is tomorrow night. Despite all my griping about all the girly stuff, I’m actually looking forward to it—for as long as I can remember I’ve enjoyed being on stage, and this small part—especially as part of a larger group—is a perfect way to dip back into it. So, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go buy some lipstick and mascara.

So, what have y’all been up to lately?

Pictures?

Oh, please post pics of you in full ballet get-up at the performance!

Shoulda kept my mouth shut!

I can’t believe that I never once considered someone would ask for pictures. The best I’m likely to do is cell-phone photos, but okay, I’ll post some.

Eek!

To each her own. Fortunately, I got ballet (and tap) out of my system many years ago.

Come to think of it, my utter disinterest in dancing (square, club, SCA, whatever) is probably in reaction to that.

But, yes. Pix, please.

Busy Living

Sunni,

It is good to hear you are well and fully engaged in the business of living. Sure beats talking on the internet about stuff that annoys us, am I right?

Myself, I'm changing jobs in a few days, which has me a little nerveous. Times have changed for me since I am now worrying more about benefits and pay lapses than the actual job itself. I guess this happens when there is a wife and child depending on you (and one on the way!). A few years ago I would have been dismayed that the job is a county job, but now it doesn't bother me enough to not take the chance to make things better for aforementioned family. It will likely result in less government-y BS than my current position anyway.

I'm happy to hear of your adventures. Have a grand holiday!

Oh, so you’re the one with the can of worms.

Sure beats talking on the internet about stuff that annoys us, am I right?

Quite right, my friend. In fact, I’ve been giving serious consideration to shuttering this place, given how infrequently anyone posts here and how little I seem to touch on the site’s stated focus when I post. The things I want to explore probably won’t be of interest to those who come ‘round here still.

Congratulations! I hope things are going smoothly for all of you. When is the newest half-pint expected to debut?

Newest Half-Pint is expected

Newest Half-Pint is expected beginning of July, just a few weeks short of big brother's 2nd birthday.

I stopped worrying about what kind of stuff I post to my blog anymore (when I post). It is more poetry and "aw, aren't kids great" sap than righteous rants on government.

Good timing.

The snolfs are almost exactly two years apart; it’s a good spacing. In part because we never fostered sibling rivalry, they get along very well 80% of the time—and that includes now, as they’re both heading into puberty.

I noticed; I swing by your place regularly. And it isn’t sap; it’s thoughtful content that reflects your priorities in life right now. Hmmm.... I think there’s an answer to my dilemma in there somewhere.

Surely it should be possible...

...to add some punches and kicks to your performance? I think Tschaikowsky would have approved!

Wonderful!

So good to hear from you and good to hear that you've been enjoying life in the meantime!

I loved theater long ago, just never could dance... marshmallow ankles. :)

I can just see you in that red dress. And yes, I'd love to see a picture, however you can manage it.

Hugs to you all!

I'd love to see photos, too

How fun!! I bet Snolf MK II enjoyed having you involved in the Nutcracker production!

I've been working quite a bit. Other than the length of time I commute, I love my job. And even the commuting isn't that grungy-- when it's starting to stress me, I just put on my favorite music and sing.

Lew and I are going to be grandparents not long after the new year. We're excited about the little one joining our family.

I'm making enjoying life and those around me my focus. The little nuances of each day are so spectacular. I'm not always successful but I'm getting better at it all the time.

Hugs! Love you!!

No pics yet ...

I’ll try to remember to take some today. The performances have gone very well, though; we got a very good review in the local newspaper which has boosted ticket sales quite a bit.

Lewlew, so good to hear from you!

Such wise words; I try to do the same but sometimes the hectic pace makes it too easy to slip from focusing on the moment to thinking about what might lie ahead. Thank you for the reminder. Love you too, and best wishes for your grandchild on the way!

Bad news... and some good

First, the bad news: I didn’t get any photos taken of either of us—it was simply too hectic. (Despite my best efforts, by the time I got both of us completely in costume and makeup there wasn’t enough time before curtain to get a shot or two. And Snolf Mk II had a small part in the beginning of the second act, so as soon as Act I bows were over we dashed back to the dressing room to redo her hair and costume for it. (I’m getting tired all over again, just writing about it.)

The good news is that at the final performance, a photographer set up a professional setup and got a photo of my ballerina, her ersatz father, and myself in full regalia. I may have to do some editing if he doesn’t want to be shown here, but I ought to be able to get that photo and post it here. Dunno how long that may take, but I’m sure no one will die of curiosity while waiting. Would a picture of me in my gi be an acceptable interim substitute? ;-)

And always happy to hear from you, H.C.!

Any pictures, any time.

Edited or otherwise... :)

Give Snolf II a big hug from me - then you'll get one too!

Life is to be lived

I can't remember the exact phrasing, but some wag once said that one blogs in inverse proportion to living one's life. Thus, when I see that a blog hasn't been updated in awhile, I figure that the person is too busy living life to blog about it.
