Got regulators?!?

Just when it seems you've heard it all -- a black market in organic raw milk.

Laws unable to cow raw-milk fans (hat tip to RRND)

What next -- meat eaters will have to buy their beef pre-cooked because raw meat is dangerous?

Nursing mothers will be required to have weekly tests run to determine their breast milk is safe, or be charged with child endangerment?

SWAT teams will be conducting regular raids on dairy farms?

Arrrgh...

Sunni says:

I saw that, too. Raw milk does taste better, and generally is much less a health concern to the general, healthy public than is let on (immunocompromised folks should probably stay away from it).

Some people in the upper midwest are getting around states' laws banning its sale in other ways that don't seem quite as risky. One involves setting up "cooperatives" wherein people who want the raw milk and other products pay to support the herd (some require some physical labor as well), and in exchange get their milk. Since they're part owners of the herd, it isn't selling milk to the general public, and hence not under the state's jurisdiction. Neat sidestep of the regulatory problem.

Yet another reason I like living in Costa Rica. I buy raw milk, both goat and cow, from a farm a few km from my house. No silly regulations to worry about.

Lipid Leggin' is here!

"Butter.

I can name a man's poison at fifty paces. I take one look at this guy as he walks in and say to myself, "Butter."

I'm embarrassed that I failed to make that connection myself, Daniel!

Daniel says:

You made it indirectly, Sunni; I never would have *heard* of F. Paul Wilson but for you.

Still yet more evidence of the internet functioning as a prosthetic memory and cognitive aide.

Aloha Blogging Head Snake,

From what I've heard, there are places in northern Whatcom County, WA (Near the stinky little town of Lynden) that sell fresh, unmumpigated milk directly from the farmer's property. And New Hampshire is supposed to have no laws preventing the sale of unprocessed milk!

Which reminds me of the fact that Canadians who like to shoot rifle and pistol have found many ways around Canada's FUBAR anti-gun laws! The Canadian shooters simply do it with a smile.

So there.

Aloha Nui Loa,

Thanks, Daniel, for posting the link to the story by F. Paul Wilson -- I enjoyed that... wish I could get one or more of my family members to read it! A great cautionary tale for those who believe that for-your-own-good laws work the way they're intended -- and sadly, it does seem prophetic, or at least prescient...

Raw Milk Consumer, Whatcom County, WA says:

This article, written by the Associated Press, hit the digital and analog print on Monday the 28th around the country: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/249853_microdaries26.html

I work and live in Whatcom County, WA and am part of a co-op that obtains fresh milk from our local dairy. While it has been under the radar for the last three years, the dairy is making efforts to get legalized as the article suggests. Bummer is with the legalization, the price nearly doubled. But it is still comparitive to crap milk you purchase at the store. Anyway, the reason for this is not so much for the government (however they can make things difficult), it is to hold off the large corporate giant Darigold (which means the same thing???). Darigold is doing everything it can to keep independent, non-cooperative dairies out of business. This is Edaleen Dairy's issue in Whatcom County (a local independent non-cooperative dairy who sells a lot of milk, ticking off Darigold and their cooperative).

Back to raw fresh milk, the issues have nothing to do with health and E-Coli [as there are more incidents of E-Coli in tainted pastaeurized milk than of fresh raw milk from smaller dairies - read "The Untold Story of Milk"], than it does with Big Business - it has always been the case, and always will. That's why we fight the good fight -to keep our local dairies up and running to provide us with healthy milk and cheese, keeping our economy local and healthy.

Thanks for the pointer to that informative article, RMC. I thought many more states prohibited the sale of raw milk than is the case. It'll be interesting to see how this clash plays out -- sounds like a case that the Institute for Justice could take on.

For any Washington residents interested in locating Edaleen Dairy, a news article at Keep Milk Prices Low gives an address, 9593 Guide Meridian, north of Lynden. Couldn't find a web site for the place, not too surprisingly, but Google Maps can point you in the right direction.
