Dos and Don’ts of Making Marshmallows

1. Do invite your children to help [as if you’d be able to keep them away once they find out what you’re doing!]
2. Do have lots of oil or butter on hand—this is one seriously sticky endeavor!
3. Do expect messes no matter how much sticky-minimizing you attempt to do
4. Do enjoy the kids’ fun, and have some of your own [Who knew making marshmallows was so easy? And they taste loads better than the store-bought ones!]
5. Do have a camera handy to take pictures of the inevitable marshmallow-cream messes
6. Don’t allow your kids outside before they get cleaned up [unless you like picking dandelion fluff, etc. out of the marshmallow mess on their bodies]
7. Don’t let a teenager into the bathroom while the marshmallow project is underway, unless you really want to spend a substantial portion of your day cleaning up every item your bored, waiting-for-a-bath, marshmallow-and-dandelion-coated children touch

Yeah, it was a fun weekend. (Got some good practice in on glass cutting, too!)

Aw Sunni, that sounds like so much fun I'm envious and wish I could join the party.I think it's neat that you do stuff like that with your kids and I'm sure they'll have lots of nice memories when they're older. You sound like a pretty good mom.

Sunni says:

Thanks, Paul! I hope we'll get together again someday too.

I try to be a good mom, and one thing that's very important to me in that is having fun with my kids. My parents were both mostly very serious with their kids until we were older; then it was a shock to realize they had senses of humor, etc. I didn't want to be that way with mine, so they see me being silly as well as serious. Wish I could be more patient, and keep my temper in better control with them, though. :(

Jorge says:

We made marshmallows about a year ago. All outside. Hosed eveyone down *before* we went back into the house. It was a lot of fun. And the mess stayed outside. I think I'll ask them if they want to do it again, sometime before our next BBQ.
